Golden Turmeric Porridge

Golden Turmeric Porridge

Our favourite breakfast! This tasty porridge is nourishing and full of nutrients to boost your immune system and aid digestion.

Until recently, digestion wasn't something I gave too much thought too. For me it was more about nourishment - getting as much good stuff in as possible! I was cramming in every superfood possible but my digestive system was not coping well. I was constantly constipated and my body wasn't actually able to utilise all the nutrients from those good, expensive foods as it was just too much!

Then I came across Ayurveda and started following a simpler diet filled with spices that aid digestion, pre-soaked, cooked and warm foods (rather than raw and cold). I swapped icy cold smoothies and juices for warm teas, hot ginger and lemon drinks, turmeric lattes, chai lattes and warm water. It felt strange at first (especially in our hot summer), but now I'm loving it and so is my digestive system! No more constipation, bloating or gas.

Ayurveda is also about the art of 'Living Wisely' which places importance on getting up with the sun and going to be early. So most nights now I'm in bed by 9-9.30pm and up by 5-5.30am. It gives me time to enjoy my warm ginger, lemon and honey drink and fit in some yoga before the kids wake up. I love it!

Then we enjoy our porridge for breakfast together. This is our favourite recipe.

GOLDEN TURMERIC PORRIDGE

Serves 6 (We make a batch every 2nd day and reheat the leftovers in between)

  • 2 cups organic rolled oats
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon grass-fee ghee
  • 1 heaped teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 heaped teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2-3 cardomom seeds (remove pods and bash the seeds a little, or use ground cardomom)
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • a little black pepper (to activate the turmeric)

Place all ingredients in Thermomix and cook at 95 degrees for 10 minutes, speed 2. Increase to speed 5 for last few seconds to make it nice and creamy.

If you don't have a Thermomix, stir all ingredients in a pot on the stove until nice and creamy.

Serve with good quality honey, milk of your choice and toasted macadamias.

Enjoy!
