Don’t be fooled by its bright green skin—inside, the black sapote is soft, rich, and dark brown, earning it the nickname chocolate pudding fruit. It’s sweet, smooth, and custard-like, with a subtle flavour that’s a bit like cocoa crossed with banana or date. It’s nature’s dessert—with no added sugar!

Grown in tropical Queensland, these fruits ripen off the tree and are ready to eat when they feel very soft to the touch (like a ripe avocado). The flesh turns almost black and glossy when perfectly ripe—don’t eat it before then, or it’ll taste chalky and astringent.
