🥛 Why Can’t We Have Dairy the Old-Fashioned Way?

Let’s talk about something udderly interesting: raw milk. 🐄🐐

It’s creamy, it’s fresh, and for thousands of years, it was just… milk. Straight from the animal, often chilled, often shared – and sometimes still warm from the animal. Fast forward to modern Australia and things have changed. A lot.

In fact, Australia is one of only two countries in the world with a complete ban on the sale of raw milk for human consumption. Yep. While raw milk is readily available (and regulated) in places like New Zealand, the UK, Europe, and many US states, Aussie and Canadian laws remain firm.

Why are we telling you about it?

Well, despite the ban, there’s a growing curiosity around raw milk - where it comes from, how it’s made, and why some people swear by it (even if we can’t officially suggest you drink it). At Spray-Free Farmacy, we stock two beautiful raw milk options, but both are strictly for cosmetic use only. That’s the law, and we abide by it.

But if you're curious about where these products come from and the farmers behind them, pull up a pew – it’s storytime.

🐄 Cleopatra’s Bath Milk

Raw Organic Cow’s Milk from Goomboorian, QLD

Produced on the stunning Beau-Vista Park Organic Farm, Cleopatra’s Bath Milk is the passion project of the Mahaffey family - stewards of a lush, volcanic-soiled farm in the Goomboorian Valley. Their cows? 100% grass-fed Jersey girls living the good life with no Bovaer, no Rumin8, no GMOs, and absolutely no hormones, antibiotics or vaccines.

Their raw milk is clean, untouched, and produced to the highest organic standards, thanks to their BFA certification. While we can't pour it over your muesli, it’s a fascinating product, lovingly made by people who care deeply about animal welfare, soil health and natural farming practices.

These folks aren’t just good at looking after cows, they’re also good at growing organic veggies that are full of flavour and nutrition. At the moment, we’re getting our beautiful zucchinis and sweet potatoes from the legends at Beau-Vista.

🐐 Forage Hill Raw Goat’s Milk

Small-Batch Goodness from Murgon, QLD

Now let’s talk goats. Quirky, affectionate, clever goats - like Dolly, Crazy, Violet, and Lil Alpie - who live with the Gamble family at Forage Hill Goats. This little dairy is something special. What started as a dream has turned into a full-blown love affair with these incredible animals, and the result is fresh Raw Goat’s Milk.

The Gambles do things differently. They don’t push their goats to produce out of season, and they don’t compromise on natural rhythms just to meet demand. Instead, they follow the herd’s lead - literally. And the result? A raw goat’s milk that reflects care, integrity and an old-fashioned respect for the land and the animals.

Their milk travels from goat to vat to bottle in minutes, then straight into the freezer. Unpasteurised and unprocessed (except for a bit of filtering), it’s about as natural as milk can be - and again, only for cosmetic use. Think milk baths, soaps, or gentle skincare rituals. 👼

So… Why Raw?

Advocates of raw milk love it for many reasons: its taste, its richness, and the belief that pasteurisation may destroy some of its naturally occurring enzymes, good bacteria and nutrients. In many parts of the world, raw milk is seen not as dangerous, but as something that, when produced safely and regulated properly, can be part of a healthy diet.

But here in Australia, it's a different story. There’s no framework for regulated raw milk for human consumption, meaning it's not legal to buy or sell for that purpose, no matter how clean or carefully it’s produced.

It raises some questions, doesn’t it?

If countries like New Zealand, England, and France have found ways to manage the risks, why haven't we? Is it time for a more nuanced conversation about how food is regulated in Australia? Could raw milk ever make a comeback in a safe and supported way?

We don’t have all the answers - but we’re all for curiosity, transparency, and celebrating the people who produce real, nutrient-dense, unprocessed food.

Final Disclaimer:

Both Cleopatra’s Bath Milk and Forage Hill Goat Milk are sold strictly for cosmetic use only and are not for human consumption. This is in accordance with Australian law, and we fully respect and follow these regulations.

At the end of the day, we believe in reconnecting people with the source of their food, even if it’s just to think more deeply, ask more questions, and appreciate the beauty behind what ends up on our shelves.

And if a milk bath is calling your name? We’ve got two gorgeous options that just might do the trick. 🛁✨
