Meet Kym Daniells, one of our dedicated banana farmers with a deep love for farming. She has turned what began as a curiosity into a lifelong passion, building a close connection with the land and her banana trees.
On her farm, Kym grows 10 varieties of bananas, all without chemicals, from popular types like Cavendish, Ducasse, Gold Finger, and Lady Finger to exotic ones like the creamy Blue Java (which tastes a bit like vanilla ice cream!). Growing bananas organically is no small feat - it takes around nine months from flowering to harvest, with each plant producing just one bunch of about 70 bananas. Once harvested, the plant is cut back, nourishing the offshoots that will grow in its place. For Kym, each day on the farm is a chance to nurture her trees and bring wholesome, clean fruit to the community.
How did you get into farming?
I bought a property 26 years ago that grew Cavendish bananas and fell in love. I was originally a plasterer, so farming was new to me, but it quickly felt like where I was meant to be.
What do you enjoy about your work?
Everything…the farms are a long love affair. There’s something special about working with the trees each day and watching the fruits of my labour grow.
Why did you decide to farm without chemical sprays? How important is this to you?
Cancer has not been fair on my family, so clean food is very important. Knowing I can grow something safe and nourishing for others keeps me motivated every day.
What challenges has this created for you and how do you overcome them naturally?
It is easy, really, as I grow trees, so it’s not too hard caring for them. Keeping the farms very clean keeps away problems, and I’ve learned that simplicity and consistency are key.
What’s your favourite meal?
My favourite meal is just a classic Spaghetti Bolognese. It’s simple, hearty, and perfect after a long day on the farm.
